Breaking away from tradition, Santa Laurensia celebrated Sumpah Pemuda 2023 in a fresh, new way. Instead of decorating classrooms or organizing themed competitions, the school encouraged its student communities to hold workshops that allowed participants to learn something new. Among these, Unity in Action (UiA) hosted an eco-enzyme soap-making workshop. Before D-Day, the UiA committee conducted experiments using the eco-enzyme produced by last year's P5 program participants. Their goal was to transform this eco-enzyme into soap. After a week of testing and refining the procedure for converting the eco-enzyme into soap was perfected. All that remained was to carry out the workshop on the big day.
The Technicalities
The event, held in the chemistry lab, began with a presentation on what UiA is, followed by a presentation of the trailer UiA made. Each table was equipped with instructions on how to make this eco-friendly soap. Though many students faced difficulties—some burned their mixtures or struggled to form solid soaps—there were also successes, with several participants succeeding in crafting several pieces of soap that they could take home with them.
This workshop not only introduced students to a practical skill but also emphasized the significance of sustainability. By participating in this activity, students not only learned how to make soap from eco-enzyme but also gained a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of their choices. The students left the workshop with a piece of their handmade soap, symbolizing their commitment to eco-conscious living.
Afterwords
Ultimately, the workshop was a meaningful way to celebrate Sumpah Pemuda, promoting a sense of unity among students while equipping them with skills that support environmental stewardship. It was an innovative and interactive way to honor the spirit of the day, reinforcing both national pride and a dedication to a sustainable future.
